Sea fishing reels carry out three extremely important functions – they are used to store the line, cast the line and retrieve it, and without a reel you’d have trouble getting anywhere near catching a fish in the ocean.

There are two types of sea fishing reels: fixed spool reels and multipliers. Of course, here at Premier Angling we stock plenty of top brand examples of each, including the big names like Shimano, Daiwa and Penn, ranging in price from around £20 to £600.

If you’re shopping for a sea fishing reel, it may help to know more about the features of the two types of reels.

Fixed Spool Reels are the most popular choice here in the UK, and they work especially well with the very long Continental style rods that are currently in favour.

Fixed spool reels were invented by one Alfred Illingworth in 1905. They are based on a fixed spool which does not rotate. Instead, a bail arm rotates around the spool, wrapping the line around the spool as you reel in.

Multiplier fishing reels are more advanced. The free-running, adjustable spool of this type of reel allows for a longer casting distance, and the cranking power is more efficient when reeling in. Multipliers are more tricky to use, though. One wrong casting move could lead to an epic “birds nest” tangle of line.

Your choice of sea fishing reel depends to a large extent on whether you are beach or boat fishing, and what your target species is.

When it comes to Multiplier reels look out for one with a good magnetic breaking system or friction system with rubber stops, which can prevent the spool from going too fast and over-running.

If you’re keen for a wild time on the shore or on the sea, we’ve got the smart reel solution for you. Our friendly, helpful consultants – experienced anglers – are always happy to share advice about sea fishing reels or any other angling equipment, so if you have queries, please feel free to contact us on 01179 867507, or use the online form. Even better, if you live in the Bristol area come and meet us and shop in person at our large, well-stocked tackle shop at Keynsham Marina, BS31 2DD.
